Weaponry
A variety of weapons were used during the civil war from knives to firearms
those of which included rifles, musket and pistols but also the widely used
cannons. It wouldn't have been much of a war without the weapons.
Cannons played a major role during the civil war. Some of the cannon used by the union and/or confederate forces like the Howitzer, the Parrot rifle and the ordnance rifle. Their were two types of long guns used by both sides during the war. The cannons roughly only inflicted the casualties on both sides by about 5% but the generals loved them and had a physiological effect on the soldiers who faced them in battle. The Civil War Musket was the first, which was the main long gun used by both the Rebels and the Yanks at the very beginning of the war. Unfortunately, this weapon didn't help the soldiers that had to carry them in the war ( the weapon wasn't any good). Unlike the Civil war Bayonet, the Civil War Swords were a recognizable symbol of the war although it was mostly a ceremony weapon for the officers. Generals used them to lead. The first engagement between two iron-clad ships was between the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia. The first fight between iron clad ships of war was in Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862.
